Can’t fall asleep? How to sleep better at night and get deep sleep

Sleep disorders is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of an individual. Poor sleep quality is caused by the individual not reaching stage 4 or delta sleep which has restorative properties. Some sleeping disorders are serious enough to interfere with normal physical, mental and emotional functioning. For instance, insomnia is characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or difficulty staying asleep. Insomnia is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. In other words, sleepiness can damage judgment and work performance.

If sleeplessness is effecting your judgment and work performance, you need to make the necessary changes so that you wake up energized and ready for a great day! You need to sleep better at night and get sufficient amount of the deep sleep for optimal performance the following day. To better understand your sleep patterns, let’s briefly discuss the four stages of sleep identified by researchers. The four stages sleep are alpha, theta, delta and REM.

While still awake and during periods of relaxation our brain waves become slower, increase in amplitude and become more synchronous. These types of brain waves are called alpha waves and are associated with states of relaxation and peacefulness during meditation.

The first stage of sleep is characterized by theta waves, which are even slower in frequency and greater in amplitude than alpha waves. The difference between relaxation and stage one sleep is gradual and subtle. During a normal nights sleep a sleeper passes from the theta waves of stage one and two, to the delta waves of stage three and four. This first and second stages of sleep are defined as the “light” stages of sleep. The third and fourth stages (the Delta sleep) is our deepest sleep, it is the most difficult stage in which to wake sleepers, and when they are awakened they are usually sleepy and disoriented. A unique stage of sleep is called REM or rapid eye movement and is the stage of sleep most associated with dreaming, vivid, story-like, dreams.

The state of sleep that you must remain in for the longest period of time is called the delta stage. This is stage three and four of your sleep cycle. When people wake up feeling lethargic it is because they’re not spending enough time in deep sleep, they’re not spending the adequate time needed in delta sleep to wake up totally revitalized and refreshed.

So, how can we all make sure that we all get the sufficient deep sleep we need to recharge for the next day? How do we train our brains on how to sleep better? There are so many products, potions and pills that claim to be the best sleeping aids. Many of these products may have undesirable side-effects like short-term memory loss, impaired physical performance and sadly, long-term chemical dependence.
